My cousin Bob owns a web directory and he makes money by selling premium spots to webmasters who want to list their websites. He gets a lot of submissions to his business and finance category because websites about loans are usually profitable. He recently set up a computers and Internet section because he noticed that a lot of webmasters were asking him if he could include this category for them. I asked if he had any real competitors and he mentioned that The Directory Zone was a really strong directory that webmasters often use. I went over to Sally’s place last night and she showed me her new pet project: A directory of directories. What in the world is that? It’s simpy a website or directory that lists out all the different types of directories including deep link directories and other similar types. Sally recently started it a few days ago so it was still pretty raw. She asked me how she could generate some traffic, buzz or search engine love for her directory and I suggested that she start a directories blog. Why not? Search engines love blogs because they constantly have new content for crawling. Using a blog is also hassle free because their CMS is idiot-proof and so simple to use. She did as I suggested and a few days later, her directory of directories was easily indexed by the search engines. Visitors started coming and she even sold a few premium spots for deep link directories. Very cool.
